Edwin.ai is a AI-powered personal English tutor. This bot is the first step in building a cost-effective service for learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Edwin will eventually become a comprehensive EFL service delivered by both bots and humans that gets students to proficiency in one-third the time and for one-third the cost of existing solutions. Edwin's team is building it for one simple reason: students and their families spend over $40 billion a year on EFL education, yet the majority of students who receive English instruction never reach proficiency.

Character design

First and foremost Edwin needed to be embodied in a character form, in order to be able to provide students with personal touch to their conversation with the bot. Together with talented illustrators from Mascotize.com, we designed and illustrated a unique witty professor character. It was a long iterative process of finding the right personality and look-n-feel for Edwin, of course it took a while time and iteration wise, but finally the team found the right approach to it.

After the character was complete, our day led to the logo design. Together with super talented and unbelievably patient lettering designer and calligrapher Tanya Cherkiz we designed the unique logotype for Edwin. Since classic hand-written calligraphy is a very painstaking work, it took around 50 different iterations before we settled down for the new Edwin's logo. We also have worked on multiple versions of the lettering according to platforms and formats in is used on.

Brand guidelines

As a new startup Edwin.ai required the brand guidlines to be placed from the very beginning. We have prepared the initial document with basis of the brand visuals and graphic rules for future designers to follow and base their work upon.

In order to diversify the in-app experience, we have designed numerous templates for stickers, informers, word-cards that appear along the way, while the student is working on vocabulary with Edwin. All of designs were implemented as dynamic parts of Messenger API and appear exactly in the body of the conversation between the student and the bot.
